Trichy, the fourth largest corporation in Tamil Nadu, has been ranked among the top few cities with improved sanitation since 2010. Trichy is partially sewered and will provide the basis for state-wide scaling up in other city corporations. It has been selected among eight cities globally for the Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) Programme by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF).
As part of TNUSSP and CWIS, fecal sludge management (FSM) solutions are under implementation, and existing urban sanitation facilities and services are being strengthened to ensure Trichy is 100 per cent sanitation secure.
