TNUSSP in collaboration with the Maraimalai Nagar Municipality, launched a pilot health screening initiative for sanitation workers on the 7th & 10th of December. This two-day initiative aimed to enhance occupational health outcomes for workers who are pivotal in maintaining urban sanitation.

The programme was inaugurated by the Chengelpat MLA, Mrs. Varalakshmi Madhusoodhanan, along with Chairman Mr. Shanmugam and Vice Chairman Tmt. Chitra.

This initiative implements the Government of Tamil Nadu’s newly developed Occupational Health Screening (OHS) Protocol. TNUSSP conceptualised this protocol in collaboration with the DMA, DTP, CMWSSB, GCC, NUHM, and health departments. The protocol marks an important milestone in prioritising sanitation workers’ occupational health and bringing in measures to ensure their well-being.

SRM Medical College and Hospital, and the Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) of Kattankulathur, supported the initiative by providing medical professionals. Approximately 250 sanitation workers, including Urban Local Body (ULB) workers, and de-sludging operators, participated in the health screening.

Registration desks and pre-test counselling were managed by Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) Animators and the TNUSSP team. The workers underwent diagnostic tests including blood tests, VIA screening, ECG, audiometry, ophthalmology, dental check-ups, etc., in scheduled batches.

On the second day, workers attended post-test consultations with medical professionals and were given the required vaccinations.

Also, dedicated desks by TAHDCO and ESIC were set up on both days to offer guidance to workers on welfare benefits and enrol them in the “Cleanliness Workers’ Welfare Board.” Additionally, a special Workplace Safety and Rights training session was conducted for women sanitation workers, to raise awareness about the rights and safety measures within their work environment.

This initiative reflects a significant step towards recognising and addressing the health needs of sanitation workers, ensuring their well-being while enhancing their professional and personal lives.
