Trichy has been selected as one of four Indian cities/towns to be covered under the city-wide inclusive sanitation (CWIS) initiative that aims at improving the existing sanitation system of the city to serve as a global benchmark.

The CWIS project will be sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and will be implemented by a consortium of organisations headed by the Indian Institute of Human Settlements (IIHS) which already runs the Tamil Nadu Urban Sanitation Support Programme ( TNUSSP ) in the state.

Sources said Trichy was selected for the CWIS project due to rapid development as well as due to its networked sewage and on-site sanitary systems such as septic tanks.

The proposed project would transform the city by developing the on-ground sanitation chain and would simultaneously take up innovative initiatives to create an accommodative environment to sustain the transformations. Stakeholders said that through the project, the overall sanitary infrastructure of the city will get a facelift on a par with global standards in the next five years.

“The CWIS project will be delivered by a consortium of partners including Trichy Corporation, NGOs and academic institutions which will led by the IIHS. Soon, the CWIS project will be launched formally in Trichy to discuss the objectives,” an official source with the IIHS said.

Resource person for the project to be implemented in Trichy has also been recruited, sources said. Multiple agencies including BMGF and World Bank will support the project to improve the overall sanitation outcome of Trichy and sustain the mechanism.

The other three places selected for the project includes Narsapur town in Andhra Pradesh, Warangal city in Telangana, and Wai town in Maharashtra.
