Despite the range of welfare schemes offered by central and state governments, many sanitation workers in Pudukottai struggle to access them due to lack of awareness and irregular work schedules. To address this, a community-based initiative was launched to train youth from sanitation worker families as digital facilitators.
L. Raja, a youth from Kamarajapuram, was identified for this initiative. Following an initial training held on 24th January 2025, attended by the Municipal Commissioner, Raja participated in weekly online sessions and completed a 45-day internship at established E-centres in Tiruchirappalli.
With the gained knowledge and skills, Raja procured the necessary equipment, and the E-centre was established at Kamaraj Nagar. On 16th May 2025, the E-centre was inaugurated by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Pudukkottai, with the City Health Officer also in attendance.
Located at the entrance of Vandi Pettai, a dense low-income settlement of nearly 3,000 residents, including 700 sanitation workers, the E-centre acts as a crucial resource. On its first day, residents accessed services like photocopying, Aadhaar-linked Public Services (AAPS), and Welfare Board applications—services that previously required a 2 km trip to the nearest centre. Now, residents of Vandi Pettai and neighbouring settlements like Kamarajapuram and Keelpuram can access essential government services in their own neighbourhood.
Reflecting on the experience, Raja shared, “Thanks to the motivation and business guidance given by IIHS staff, I was able to start this venture.” This initiative showcases a replicable model for digital inclusion, youth entrepreneurship, and community-led service delivery for sanitation worker families.
