TRICHY: Nearly 300 informal
sanitary workers, most of them women, were provided with the occupational identification cards that entitle them to claim benefits under the unorganised workers’ welfare board of the labour department.

The cards were distributed during an event held as part of the international women’s day celebration organised by City Wide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) between newly-elected women councillors of the Trichy Corporation and women sanitary workers.

The demands and constraints faced by the sanitary workers were shared with the councillors to find solutions.

“From educational assistance to accident relief, the sanitary workers can now claim financial assistance for weddings of their wards, educational expenses and the old age pension. We have planned to cover at least 1,000 contractual sanitary workers,” I Ambalavanan, director,
